Info

Nikki and Michelle live on opposite sides of Australia, but they share a close passion for all things fashion. From the West to the East, States of Style is all about where they went, what they wore, and where you can get it.

LOCATION: Hosier Lane and Chuckle Park, Melbourne.

EVENT: Sunday in the city.

STYLE:  Top; Manning Cartell. Skirt; Kookai. Heels; Tony Bianco.  Jewellery; House of Harlow 1960Mimco & Lovisa.  Watch; Casio. Handbag; Marc Jacobs.

COMMENT: With a few errands to run on Sunday, I managed to enjoy my weekend trip to the city by a quick trip down one of the most well-known laneways of Melbourne, followed by a lazy beer in my new fave place: Chuckle Park.  As described by their website, Chuckle Park is ‘a charming cosy outdoor space, with a big heart and an even bigger soul’. Sometimes it can be hard to create a space that is both casual and cool, and these guys nailed it. In regards to Manning Cartell, well, this isn’t my first or last post.

LOCATION: Port Phillip Estate & Red Hill Brewery, Red Hill & Half Moon Bay, Black Rock.

EVENT: Summer holidays.

STYLE:  Top; Manning Cartell. Skirt; White Suede. Heels; Tony Bianco. Bikini; Wrangler. Jewellery; House of Harlow 1960, Mimco & Lovisa.  Watch; Casio.

COMMENT: In the down time you find yourself with between Christmas and New Year, I managed to tick a few trips off my wish list by heading to Red Hill. Port Phillip Estate has such a refined air to it that you can’t help but imagine having your wedding there. Red Hill Brewery is the opposite; relaxed and a little rough around the edges in the exact way you want a brewery to be.

LOCATION: The Wembley, Perth.

EVENT: Work Christmas party.

STYLE: Top and shorts; Scanlan Theodore. Heels; Chloé. Bag; Chanel. Necklace; Zara, Singapore.

COMMENT: What’s not to love about Christmas?! Home Alone, food and presents are only just the beginning. This night at The Wembley was a festive send-off to see out the school year and celebrate six-weeks of impending vacation. Hello holidays!

LOCATION: Claremont, Perth.

EVENT: Saturday shopping.

STYLE: Skirt; Scanlan Theodore. Bag; Chanel. Top; Manning Cartell. Sunglasses; Louis Vuitton. Sandals; Country Road.

COMMENT: Scanlan Theodore is now available online and I’m still undecided as to whether I’m into this or not. This is the enivitable future for all brands but does this mean that brands will lose their exclusivity? Now don’t get me wrong; I was in that online store as soon as it launched, but nothing is better than walking into a store filled with new season pieces and having the girls actually show you how it’s meant to be worn. You won’t find that in a box (no matter how bloody pretty and convenient it is!).

NB: I’m trying my absolute hardest to wear other labels… It’s just a little hard when Scanlan keeps nailing it season after season!

LOCATION: The Merrywell, Crown Casino. Whitehouse Institute of Design, Melbourne.

EVENT: A Night in White – Whitehouse Institute of Design’s 25 Years in Design.

STYLE:  Silver Dress; Topshop. Leather Jacket; Florence Leather Markets. Jewellery; House of Harlow 1960 & Lovisa. Boots; Wittner. Handbag; Marc Jacobs. Watch; Casio.

COMMENT: The Whitehouse Institute of Design has been on my radar for a while, so I was thrilled to be invited to their 25th Anniversary celebrations: ‘A Night in White’ in collaboration with Vogue Australia. The opportunity to see some of Melbourne’s best emerging didn’t disappoint, with a few stand outs that I will be keeping an eye out for including Carla Noto and James Penrose. Through Kate Bosworth’s latest collection for Topshop, I actually found this silver dress that I wore to the event which reminded me of Kate Moss in the 90’s (see the pic I mean here) when she ruled the world with Naomi Campbell.

LOCATION: Fenix. Richmond, Melbourne.

EVENT: Launch of Fenix

STYLE:  Jacket: Marcs. Cotton Shirt: Country Road. Leather Skirt: direct from Mum’s wardrobe. Earrings; Lovisa. Lipstick: Revlon – ‘Ravish Me Red’.

COMMENT: Fenix is located just below us here at Nova 100, so it has always been a popular destination for after work drinks overlooking the Yarra River. Recently Fenix had a makeover and is now a beautiful function space decked out in a sophisticated design and ‘still talking about it the next day’ food. Although we can no longer pop in for a cheeky wine after-hours, I am looking forward to planning an event here soon!

LOCATION: Gramercy Bistro at The Cullen, followed by The Emerson, Prahran, Melbourne.

EVENT: Sunday Afternoon

STYLE: Top (which is actually bathers): Lara Bingle for Cotton On Body. Silk Skirt: Gorman. Shoes: Wittner. Purse: WitcheryHouse of Harlow 1960 & Lovisa.

COMMENT: Recently I discovered the Sunday lunch (see previous post; ‘Lunch Lately‘), and now it’s my thing. Sunday just gone was sunny and warm in Melbourne – so you have to make the most of it when it happens! Lunch was set for Gramercy Bistro at The Cullen which involved sweet corn and zucchini fritters, with an Earl Grey Martini on the side… heaven. Feeling full but still thirsty, we walked across the road to reach The Emerson rooftop and it didn’t disappoint. After a few more cocktails in the sun, I was still home in time to do a load of laundry.

LOCATION: Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, Perth.

EVENT: The Beaufort Street Festival.

STYLE: Shorts; Scanlan Theodore. Bag and sunglasses; Chanel. Top; Zara, Italy. Wedge heels; Country Road.

COMMENT: The Beaufort Street Festival hasn’t taken long to explode. Within five years it has become the coolest street party in Perth and it’s getting bigger each year with fashion, food, music, cocktails and thousands of people integrated. People watching at its finest and hipsters galore.

LOCATION: The Prince Alfred, Richmond, Melbourne.

EVENT: Melbourne Cup

STYLE: Crop Top/Bustier: Cue Clothing. Silk Skirt: Gorman. Hat: Kangol. Headpiece: Sportsgirl. Bangles: House of Harlow 1960 & Lovisa.

COMMENT: The first Tuesday in November is definitely one Tuesday I always look forward to! This Melbourne Cup Day, instead of heading into Flemington, I spent my morning shopping on Chapel St. I then met friends at The Prince Alfred for a long lunch and relaxed punt. Good weather, friends and a public holiday… Bring on Melbourne Cup 2014.

LOCATION: Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne.

EVENT: Oaks (Ladies) Day

STYLE: Dress; Camilla & Marc.  Shoes; Robert & Robert. Headpiece; David Austin’s from Camberwell Market Florist. Sunglasses; Marc Jacobs.

COMMENT: Spring Racing season is easily my favourite time of year in Melbourne. It’s difficult not to get caught up in the hype of it when there is even a public holiday to celebrate. The fashion and flowers are impossible to miss – and you don’t even need to be anywhere near the racecourse to see it. Oaks Day, as per every race day I manage to attend, was freezing but fun. I absolutely loved the David Austin Headpiece the amazing team at the Camberwell Market Florist created for me (pics of it currently also on their blog!).  At the end of the day I was more than happy to be whizzed off in a helicopter to kick on at a warmer location.
